And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). This is something that all Christians should automatically know and have confidence in.

God is inherently good. But God is also inherently just. He demands justice. That’s the value of the cross. None of these promises work for self-righteous people who don’t need the cross, because God demands justice. Having paid the greatest price to redeem our sin, by paying for it with the precious blood of His own Son, Jesus Christ, He can now be both just and good in our lives. Grace is only available when justice has been served. Thank you, Jesus!

Since we have embraced the covenant relationship we have with God the Father, through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus, and made aware of such by the revealing of the Holy Spirit, we now begin to wrap our minds around this greatest of all promises to the saints, His church.

Because the Spirit of God intercedes for me continually, with requests I can’t grasp or understand, I walk by faith in Him, trusting Him to work out His goodness in me, in spite of my many failings. That’s grace.

If you have not entered into this covenant relationship with Christ that satisfies God’s just demands, do it right now. You don’t have to be in church. You can do this at your computer or iPhone. Just do it quickly so God can begin to implement His purposes in your life.

Evangelist Oral Roberts was always good at using simple illustrations for spiritual principles. He once told the following story:

“A Sunday school teacher, desiring to help her first grade students understand truth, came upon a simple illustration. She wrote the word “devil” on the chalkboard, then she erased the letter “d”, making the word “evil”.

‘The devil is evil,’ she said, ‘because he always takes away from us.’ Then she wrote the word “God” on the chalkboard and added an “o”, making the word “good.”

‘But God is good,’ she explained, ‘because He is always giving to us.’

Then Oral Roberts summarized, “The devil is a thief who comes to rob us of our joy and hope, our finances, our health, and even life itself. But our God is a giver, ever pouring His blessings upon us from His rich abundance. He is the giver of joy, peace, assurance, comfort, hope, and every other blessing we enjoy in life. And so that we might have eternal life, He gave us the greatest gift of all. He gave His Son to die for our sins.”

You wouldn’t believe the trouble Anita and I had getting back to Indiana from Arizona! Our flight left Phoenix on schedule, but we had a one hour layover in Dallas. Storms were so severe over Dallas that they closed the airport and were not receiving flights. They diverted us to Oklahoma City where we sat on the runway for two hours. Finally they reopened the Dallas airport and we were able to proceed to that airport.

By then our flight back to Fort Wayne had been cancelled due to the storms and they had to put us up overnight in a hotel. Due to a lightning strike in Dallas the equipment used to unload luggage was out of service and our checked baggage was not accessible. So we had to wash out our underwear in the sink. Five hours later we had to get up to catch another flight out to Fort Wayne.

Life is full of interesting twists and turns. Some are good, like the really nice Embassy Suites room with breakfast buffet the airport arranged for us; and some are bad, like the flight fiasco I just described. But we’ve learned to trust God in all things. What’s the latest fiasco you’ve experienced and what good thing came out of it?

Girl Scouts are busy out there selling cookies right now.  We all know this is an annual fund-raiser for the Girl Scouts.  And we all know how good these cookies are.  I’m looking at a half-eaten box of Thin Mints (my favorite) as I write this.  How can anything that tastes so delicious have all those unsavory ingredients that are listed on the label?  Such things as thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, and cocoa processed with alkali!  Yuck!  There’s got to be a lesson in that somewhere.

Perhaps we learn that for anything to be really “good” it must also have some elements that aren’t so good.  Like marriage, for example.  For there to be a really good marriage, there must be a testing time that brings out the worst in each partner so it can be dealt with so only the good remains.  That takes a process of time and involves some yucky stuff, but, boy, is it worth it in the end!  Hang in there; it gets better.
