SOTOMAYOR

Posted by: pastordiehl   in Hot Potato Politics

Let’s look at one final hot potato topic before we get back to more devotional items. Sonia Sotomayor has been confirmed as America’s first hispanic Supreme Court Justice, but not without a valiant fight from the Republican side. As we all know, Supreme Court justices are to be political-neutral.

Our constitution calls for Supreme Court Justices to be appointed by the sitting President. Every time a President, from either party, appoints a justice, the other political party puts up a whale of a fight to prove them unfit, thus throwing into question the justice’s credibility. Its true that past liberal justices have attempted to reroute America by reinterpreting the constitution. From the news I’ve picked up there is absolutely no reason Sotomayor is not qualified for the position, except that she is a woman, a hispanic, or that she was appointed by a Democratic President. Yet 31 Republican senators voted against her appointment. How can a political system like ours survive if the government is so stalemated politically that it cannot function as the constitution calls for?

I had the same complaint when the previous Republican President faced the same opposition. What’dya think?

I think that the parties get so entrenched in fighting one another, that the purpose they are meeting for gets lost along the way. It doesn’t seem to matter if it is a Supreme Court justice or passing a bill. If the other guy suggested it, they are bound and determined to make sure it doesn’t succeed.
Obama promises to try to end this, and certainly did appoint people from both parites. My fear is that he won’t be able to control the dispute that has festered for decades.

Wouldn’t life be much simpler if we didn’t have the two party system? What if we chose and voted for the person based on their morals, values and past history. Would we still not have the valiant fight per say. I think that’s the great thing about our country and our democratic system. We are all free to express our opinions and in the end we should ultimately get what the majority wants. In the case of a Supreme Court Justice, this position is so very important they actually determine the meaning behind our Constitution. If someone is appointed thats very liberal with their interpretation, then our laws are skewed towards those believes. On the other hand if we appoint a very conservative member then we swing the opposite direction. Ideally we should have it equaled out so views from both sides of the spectrum are heard. I was reminded recently by a wise man of a much wiser man from around 2000 years ago, that prayed all night long in order to chose only 12 disciples. You see those 12 individuals would have to carry his word out into the world. I guess if we look at it in that light we can understand how important a decision it is, and shouldn’t be taken lightly.
