‘1-A’ AND VIETNAM

   Posted by: pastordiehl   in Uncategorized

As a child, I didn’t like reading. I hated reading assignments in school. With attention deficit disorder, I couldn’t focus long enough to get anything out of the book. But when I was a Senior in High School, I read a cheap paperback titled ‘1-A’. It was the story of an American who was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. The story told about his experiences in the jungles and the atrocities of the evil Viet Cong.

The book intrigued me and held my attention. I was persuaded that the war was a worthy cause to deliver people from Communism. Later that year, when my number was up for the draft, I decided to enlist rather than be drafted. That book played a major role in my decision. I entered the Army a flag waving patriot. Unfortunately, three years later I had changed my opinion of that war, and came home disillusioned. That led to a pursuit of alcohol and the hippie culture, championed by The Beatles.

The only other book to influence my life like that was the Bible. When I discovered Christ I tore into that book searching for the truth of God. I read it from cover to cover in 12 months, retaining much of the content. It was like ADD was gone. At least in that area, anyway.

What one book changed you the most?

When I was 20 years old I read the book THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING By Norman Vincent Peale. This book helped me escape so many negative issues I was trying to heal from that plagued me during my youth. Although is had a major impact on my life and I would reccomend for anyone to read it the impact it has had on my life pales in comparison to another book Iv’e read. I too have read the bible cover to cover. I didn’t retain all of it but enough that I love reading it over a again and looking up passages to help navigate my life or to help others in their journey. The one thing I love about the biblle is that although it never changes when I read it I change. Through this wonderful book I learn how to love more, to trust more, to understand the benefit of obedience and desire to be further from the consequence of disobedience. Iv’e read many books and I would recomend each of them to different people based on their personalities. However, the bible is one book I would recomend to EVERYONE no matter their personality or lifestyle. God’s word is universal and even though it sometimes takes reaading the bible many times to understand it…the journey through this book it worth the time.
