12 Days: DAY EIGHT

Posted by: pastordiehl   in Twelve Days

On the eighth day of Christmas my True Love sent to me: Eight Maids a Milking“.

Today is not only New Years, but also the eighth day of the Christmas festival, according to the early church calendar. The Maids a Milking represent the eight beatitudes of Jesus recorded in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:3-10. The Beatitudes, often described as the Be-Attitudes, are an example of Hebrew poetry of the style often used in the Psalms or Proverbs. Two contrasting statements were made, proving a point.

For example, the first beatitude says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven“. The poor in spirit are usually looked down upon in our society. These are the very people who own heaven! It doesn’t make sense to the natural mind, but that’s the point. Only in spiritual thinking does it make sense.

Heaven is a place of reward in another dimension. We store up treasures in heaven by sacrificing down here. Few Christians understand this. Together, these Beatitudes bring about great rewards for us, like Maids a Milking!

The poor in spirit reminds me of Matthew 18:3 to have that mind of a child and to stay grounded is such an important spiritual principle. The disciples despite having spent three years with jesus learned about it in the book of John as Jesus got out the towel and showed reminded them about servanthood and passion for others. Twice I have been involved in a footwashing ceremony, once at a friends house where out of pure love for these people the holy spirit moved me to just get the water going, as they were making a big deal out of our small bible study with this dear old lady. Sometimes if we just let go and let God, amazing things will happen in the most uncommon places and with the most uncommon people. Praise the Lord For a good 2010, as we will be leaving Evansville Sunday morning so God Bless you pastor diehl and the services and for the fellowship, unity, and for salvations to pour out everywhere from the altar to the parking lot, Praise God. All in love KerryD.
