EVANGELISM

Posted by: pastordiehl   in WORK OF AN EVANGELIST

This week I thought it would be good to blog about evangelism. We are all called to do the work of an evangelist (2 Timothy 4:5), even though those with the gift of evangelism are few.

The word ‘evangelism’ is scary. Consider a new definition offered by Steven C. Bonsey in his article ‘A Shy Person’s Guide to the Practice of Evangelism’:

“Let’s pretend that you are someone who might be willing, in theory, at some point, possibly, to consider maybe doing something, that, while not ‘evangelism-type’ evangelism, still could be in some way construed as a sort of sharing of hope. Kind of.”

A little bit of double-talk perhaps, but it gets the point across that people are afraid of the word. The root word is ‘angel’= messenger. It simply means the act of telling someone the good news of Jesus Christ. How do you define ‘evangelism’?

It is spreading the good news of Jesus Christ our savior, but sometimes not in a way expected, as an example when we worked at a gas station off the high way down by Batesville where I’m originally from one Saturday night a man of tall stature about 6ft. 4 or 5 came in in we said our hellos and he began to tell us that he was a real life bounty hunter who was looking for someone and he proceeded to show us his scars and bruises and cuts, and I just casually mentioned about Jesus and this huge man began to break down and really tell his story as he said folks, I am a pastors son and I gave my heart to the Lord at a very young age and now look at me going around doing such terrible and dangerous things and I feel I’ve lost it all. Well, I grabbed his arm much to Freda, my wifes surprise and told him sir you have lost nothing because once you have given your heart to Jesus Christ it’s a done deal. He’s done it all for you and me on that cross so don’t fret and go out there with stronger faith. He staightened himself up, gave us a hug and went on his way. Be ready in season and out to give a word of hope to whoever comes your way today, God Bless, KerryD.
