DEPRESSION MYTHS

   Posted by: pastordiehl   in Uncategorized

In his book Real Solutions for Overcoming Discouragement, Rejection, and the Blues (Vine Books), H. Norman Wright lists several Depression Myths: “Be aware of these common but mistaken beliefs if you or someone in your family seems to be suffering from depression:

Myth 1: Depression for a Christian is a sin.

Myth 2: Depression’s the same for every person.

Myth 3: If you have enough willpower, you can overcome depression.

Myth 4: If you’re depressed, you can’t be productive.

Myth 5: Counseling won’t work.

Myth 6: If you take medication, you’ll become addicted to or dependent on it.

What do you know about depression?

I know ALOT about depression because I went through it for many years. Sometimes, depression is a chemical imbalance. At least with me, it was. It wasn’t something I could just get better on my own with. The doctors used trial and error to find the correct medication and finally they did. I have been happy, productive, and clearheaded ever since. So, if you are depressed, it is not the end of the world. The sun will come out again. Nothing is too bad to feel hopeless. Things change, circumstances change, and things DO get better!Don’t ever feel you are a bad or a worthless person because you are depressed. Things you feel depressed about today, can quickly change tommorrow. So, hang in there!

I know about depression. I guess what i am suffering from is a form of depression. I have panic attacks which makes you feels fear that is overwhelming. My doctor is also trying to adjust the checmical inbalance in my brain with medication. Like Michelle it is trial and error. I get so disacouraged at times. I pray alot and i rebuke the fear and panic i feel and sing songs of praise. Thank you Michelle for writing. It makes me feel there is light at the end of this tunnel i am in. If i knew why i am suffering from this i would feel better. Only God knows and i pray he will show me. This all started after i suffured a heart attack last september. I will appreciate everyones prayers. I claim healing of this fear in the name of Jesus. May He guide the doctors hands.

I agree with the myths you posted. Depression runs in our family, from my mother to all 4 of my siblings and myself. In fact, 3 of my siblings are currently being treated. My oldest sister tried to take her own life twice. It is real and scary, but it can be overcome with the right help. Praise God!
