I have a niece who resides in Stryker, Ohio, who asked me to marry her and her fiance’. So I scheduled my vacation to coincide with her wedding so I wouldn’t be pressed to get back to Waterloo for the Saturday night service. That way I could enjoy time with family at the reception.
This wedding occuring today is at Founder’s Hall at Sauder’s Village in Archibald. Whenever I do a wedding in a strange place it takes me a bit to get oriented and decide where we come in from, etc. People will be sitting at tables for the wedding and the reception in the same room, so we had a bit of improvising to do with the wedding plans.
I never know exactly how everything will go in a wedding with several parts, but I always know God will be there to give me the necessary wisdom to put it all together. In the same manner, God will always be there to help you through your own unusual circumstances.
When was the last time God helped you with a difficult situation?
Yesterday I finished up hanging the trim around the doors and windows, am almost finished cutting, staining, finishing and hanging a chairrail in my den, refinished the arms on an old rocking chair for Anita, and hung the towel holders and toilet paper holder in the bathroom. Although its taken a week and a half, I’m nearly finished with the basement work I needed to do prior to the carpet being laid.
Today is my outside day. I need to burn a bunch of brush, trim weeds, transplant a yearling hickory tree from the woods (if I can find one), spray weeds and clean the garage. All this physical work is wearing me out. But I’m looking forward to being back in church this weekend. I miss being with my church family.
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1).
This is vacation season and most people are planning some sort of get-away. As a child my family always went north for a camping trip. It was nice getting away from the humidity and fun living in the big World War II surplus army tent Dad always brought along in his trailer. When I got old enough I was a big help setting that monster up. It provided some privacy, but not much shelter when it rained, as it was full of holes.
We slept on Army cots and always camped where there was good fishing for Dad. Each year I brought home a new pet; sometimes a turtle, sometimes a snake, but always something that wouldn’t live long.
I had my first case of puppy love on one of those camping trips. I met a pretty young gal from Grand Rapids named Debbie who camped nearby. One day when her parents were gone she invited me to watch her change into her swimsuit. I was only about 14 and that scared the daylights out of a small town boy like me. I got out of there fast!
What memories do you have of vacationing as a child?
I heard of a 12-year old boy who was a key witness in a lawsuit. One of the lawyers, after intense questioning, asked, “Your father told you what to say, didn’t he?”
“Yes,” answered the boy.
“Now tell us,” pursued the lawyer, “what were his instructions?”
“Well,” replied the boy, “Father told me the lawyers would try to tangle me in my testimony; but if I would just be careful and tell the truth, I could say the same thing every time.”
“A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who speaks lies will not escape” (Proverbs 19:5).
