GUARANTEED PEST CONTROL

   Posted by: pastordiehl   in Uncategorized

Three pastors got together for coffee one day and found all their churches had had bat-infestation problems. “I got so mad,” said the Baptist preacher, “I took a shotgun and fired at them. It made holes in the ceiling, but did nothing to the bats.”

“I tried trapping them alive,” said the Methodist preacher. “Then I drove 50 miles before releasing them, but they beat me back to the church.”

“I haven’t had any more problems,” said the Lutheran preacher.

“What did you do?” asked the others, amazed.

“I simply baptized and confirmed them,” he replied. “I haven’t seen them since.”

Although we smile as we read, we know why that story is so funny. I have seen countless times when a new face appeared at our church and the person immediately wanted to become a member and be baptized. People think that some quick initiation will make them an insider and all their problems go away. When the problems are still there next Sunday, they give up and never come back. They never understood that it was themselves that was supposed to change.

If you’re reading this, I’m glad that you understand. We need to be baptized, but for the right reason. What would you say is the right reason?

I agree with Sharon, in obedience to His command. A public declaration of the decision we have made to give our life to Jesus and to follow Him and His teachings.

Also, to show others that we will get dunked and brought back up and not drowned :) .

My son Chase was baptized before I was. He was only 7 years old but he brought the topic up to me on several occassions. We knew it was something he thought through and wanted to do.We didn’t make a lot of fuss over it. We took him out to eat at his favorite restaurant afterwards. A year or so later I felt I needed to be baptized. I knew Chase had been so mature about it when he was baptized so I thought I would talk to him about me being baptized. I asked him if he really thought it was something I really needed to do. He very enthusiastically answered with a big “Yes!” WhenI pressed further and asked why, he surprised me by saying, “It feels good. And you get to go out to eat!”
But seriously– my reason for being baptized after being a Christian for about 13 years was because I realized it was a simple act of obedience. It also was a public declaration of personal commitment that made me a more effective witness.
