THE BEST THING

   Posted by: pastordiehl   in Uncategorized

What was the number one best thing that happened to you in 2008?

I think there were two best things that happened to me in 2008. First, my father’s deteriorating health brought me closer to him than I’ve ever been since childhood. I gained a great respect for him.

Secondly, my prostate cancer brought me face to face with my mortality and caused me to reevaluate the value of my relationship with my wife.

Both of those best things were the result of trouble in my life. I wonder if there might be a lesson in that for us?

What is the best thing that happened to you in 2008?

I think that the best thing that happened to me was that God is teaching me that He is in control of my life. He always has been and always will be. I haven’t always seen it that way, but He is making it more clear to me. He has used several situations this year that have seemed very negative (deaths of close friends and relatives, my mom’s heart attack, job transitions, downsizing) and has given me a peace through it all. They haven’t been easy, but they would have been impossible if I had not known that He is ultimately in control.

My faith has grown and grown and grown. I have learned to trust the Lord more and more. The primary reasons are health issues with my mother and my husband. The most humbling experience of 2008 was the opportunity to serve as a Deaconness. That was a God surprise for me! I am more than anticipating whatever God has for me in 2009. He gives me more and more opportunities to share my music and poetry. I think that may have been a result of my in depth study of Oswald Chambers “My Utmost for His Highest”. I had read it before, but in 2008 I really digested it. Praise the Lord.

The best thing thing that happened to me was that my mother-in-law, Lucille, came out to California to stay with my husband and I for the winter months. It seems that it was also the best thing for her because she has had such a wonderful TRUE Christian experience with the members of our community and been such a blessing to others in her involvement with the Good Samaritans here in our community! Thank God for wonderful Christian women and mother’s like her!
