HONORING PARENTS

   Posted by: pastordiehl   in Uncategorized

I played hooky with this blog yesterday to give attention to my Dad’s funeral and spending time with family. My sister and her husband, Diane and Rex Bartlett, flew in from Washington State and were staying with us, as well as our daughter and husband, Jenny and Josh Doyle, and two grandkids from Nashville, Tennessee.

I want to thank everyone for your expressions of love and respect for my Dad. I firmly believe in the command that we must honor our mother and father that our days may be long in the land (Exodus 20:12 and repeated 7 times in the Bible). When Dad asked me to speak at his funeral, I saw this as an opportunity to honor my father with my words.

I’m currently writing a history of the wartime experiences of my Mom and Dad and only need to do a bit more editing and add pictures. What are you planning to do to honor your parents?

I was just talking about this subject with a good friend at church this past weekend. We both put our parents through alot with the choices of our youth. In the process we got our own kids, and we will hopefully never experience the pain our parents did by having to watch our kids make horrible messes of their lives. At this point in my life, one of the best ways I can honor my parents (and it is clear that this makes them very happy) is to never stray from my Christian heritage again, live for the Lord, and raise my family in Godliness. What a blessing for you to have the opportunity to honor your father at his funeral. I’m sure it wasn’t easy, but a special and rare thing that you will always cherish.

I can’t express enough how important this is…you never know how long your parents will be around. My dad passed away 28 years ago, my mom 15. There are so many times I wish I could have one more minute with them…say that one thing I wished I had said…do things a little differently. If you love your parents, you WILL honor them. It’s the right thing to do…IT’S THE GODLY THING TO DO, no matter how old you are.

Wilbur and Joyce are SUPER Super Seniors. I have enjoyed so much connecting with them and really getting to know them. Wilbur just loved the oldies that I would sing for him.
You asked what we are doing to honor our folks. I lost my Dad in 1968 and still miss him today, but I still have my Mama Rose. Right now I am working on a book (with pictures) called “Special Memories of a Special Lady”. Many of her friends and family are sharing favorite memories about her music, personality, spiritual gifts, etc. I coulnd’t wait, so I have showed Mama the work in process! Fun!
