BLACK FRIDAY

   Posted by: pastordiehl   in Uncategorized

Today is Black Friday, known as such because so many people do shopping that it is the first day of the year  that merchants go in the black. But, economists are telling us that the average Christmas shopper will spend about $200 less this year than in 2007.

A valuable side effect of this downtown in consumer purchases is that, if these stores don’t sell their stock by Christmas, they’ll be forced to mark those prices way down in January to liquidate their stock. That can be a real blessing to those of us who can delay shopping until then.

One money saving idea would be to buy and wrap an accessory to the real gift (such as a TV stand), and then go shopping together later for the new TV. Of course, we run the risk the TV you want will be all gone by then.

But, remember in this consumer-driven culture, that we are to be good stewards of what the Lord has placed in our care. Making your dollars stretch is good stewardship.

Yes today is black friday. but for many no fridays will be black for awhile and they have been laid off or hours cut at work. As i talked to my home health client who is 83 yrs old we talked of wealth and poverty. She lived through the depression and talked of how little they had but had what they needed and not much of what they wanted. Another client who is 85 years old recalled how her mother and brother and herself walked 5 miles to get a free pound of lard and she was old enough to also get a pound but brother was too young. How many of us would walk 1 mile to get a staple for our family. not many! i remember my grandma telling me how they were very poor but that my great grandma never ever turned anyone away. The bums who road the freight cars all knew to go to Emmas house as she would give them a slice of bread butter and sugar at least. Where have the days gone when people freely helped others without thinking of what kind of tax write off they may get. When neighbors knew when neighbors were in need and helped. a few months ago i was at a resturant in auburn eating lunch, there was a man trying to get his debit card to work and even after calling his bank and being told he would have to wait till the right person to get back from lunch to fix it. i motioned to the man and handed him $10.00 and said pay for your lunch. He thanked me over and over. I never expected to ever get it back didn’t even think about that. well a few weeks later i took some food over to neighbors who were having rough times and the lady said if you ever run across a cheap coffee pot at a garage sale could you get it. You see she cares for her mother who has alzheimers and she cant make mom understand why they cant make coffee in the morning. I was very short on money but i prayed and said if i could not find one at a sale i would take $10.00 and get one at the dollar store. The next morning as i got ready to go to work there was a loud knock at my door. I went to the door and there stood the man who i had given the $10.00 to and he haned me a crisp $10.00 bill and said thank you again for your kindness and he left. With tears in my eyes i said there is the ten for the coffee pot thank you Jesus. See how great God is He sent that man to me to help someone else. I shared the story with my neighbor and we all shed tears and thanked God for his faithfulness.
