REMEMBERING MAX

Posted by: pastordiehl   in Casting Out Cancer

One of the problems I’m dealing with now is that I have to make frequent trips to the bathroom which interrupts my sleep. Once I’m awake its hard to get back to sleep. My wife informs me women have to deal with that all the time. I hope I get adjusted to the nights before I go back to work next week.

I spent a couple of hours with my Dad and Mom yesterday, helping them understand some financial issues that confused them, and picking up Dad’s guitar. He is the original owner of a 1953 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop, and I’m taking it to a classic guitar dealer in Nashville on Friday, while we’re down there, to have it officially appraised. Then we want to have it insured to protect his estate.

If you haven’t yet heard, Max Shumaker passed away last night. Max played a major role in the early days of New Hope Christian Center. He sang in the choir, worked with the youth ministry, drove a bus, and worked on the sound board. We will miss him. What will you remember about Max?

Max was a special guy. We knew the family for years and knew Max when he was a boy. I remember when i moved back to Indiana from Mich. When my grandparents became unable to take care of their home so i could be close to do the work for them. We had to find a place to rent and got a big old farm house that the wind blew right threw. I had to find a job and was very short on money and it was near christmas. One evening there was a knock at the door and there was Max with a christmas tree and lights and everything to decorate it with. Max will surely be missed as he had a big heart and he truley cared.

Pastor, I am well aware of your frequent trips to the restroom as I experienced the same thing after my similar surgery. I also want to let you know from experience, that Marie and I headed for Tennessee about 4 weeks after I had surgery. I found that from the need to sit up in the vehicle plus the movement and mild jarring from the road surface; that I had to stop about every 80 to 100 miles for a restroom break. Therefore I suggest that you take heed of the feeling and when it strikes, it is time to either pull over at a Restpark or if all else fails….head for the nearest tree.

As for Max, I have many fond memories from many years of knowing him. I suppose that most of them would be from when I worked at PD Waterloo and he was working at PD Auburn as a Communications Officer. Max would often stop at Waterloo and visit with me while on duty after his shift had ended. We would talk and share our interest. Later on when I drove Bus for the Church, Max volunteered to ride along as an adult chaperone to help keep the children in line. When Marie and I were selling our Waterloo home so that we could move to Auburn; Max purchased our home as he and Cookie were getting married and he thought our house would make a nice place for them to start their lives together.

Max will be missed, but Praise God, he is in a better place now. I am sure he is now a member of the Lords Choir singing never ending praises.

I probably best remember Max from the early 1990′s as my Junior High Sunday School teacher when we held the class in about a third of the old modular building behind the old, little church building.
I also remember Max was a wonderful storyteller. He would have the class on the edge of our seats as he told a story about a Helicopter or life as a security officer. He always had some story to share.

I remember that Max was always willing to drive the church van or bus for the boy scout troop. And he always made sure the trip was fun.

Max has been a friend of 20 years. Now I don’t use the past tense because he’s still here in spirit, and he’s waiting for us at home.

I had the pleasure of singing in a group called In One Accord with Max several years ago. We got to be good friends. While life’s travels took us in different directions, we always picked up where we left off when we met again.

The last six months I have had the pleasure of working with Max at WINM. He recommended me for a job there and we always had a good time. We had many lengthy conversations. He was having some struggles but leaned on the Lord every step of the way. He is sorely missed, but he is enjoying the presence of Jesus in that brand new body. SOLDIERS AGAIN IN THE ARMY OF THE LORD.
